Tuesday Wrap: Notion of quick budget deal laughable to some

June 12th, 2019

— Budget negotiations are ongoing, but when a compromise might be reached is anyone’s guess.

Senate leaders said some people are optimistic about a deal being struck in the coming days, while others are not. When House Speaker Tim Moore mentioned during Tuesday morning’s session a possible budget vote next week, he noted that one of the senior budget chairs laughed out loud.

Gov. Roy Cooper wants Medicaid expansion written into the budget – he hasn’t said he would veto a budget that doesn’t include it, however – and he found another reason to tout the benefits of expansion. At a state summit on fighting the opioid crisis, he said the majority of people who are hospitalized with opioid addiction are uninsured, and Medicaid could help cover their treatment costs.

Also Tuesday, three senators said they plan to restore language in a pending bill that would prohibit drivers from using hand-held phones, and Wilmington-area lawmakers pressed for more action on coal ash cleanup after a study found massive amounts of toxic chemicals in Sutton Lake.
